A fun event that went fairly smoothly in all. Eight laps to be completed with a
special that was part of the course to start with (later removed from the main
track). Six of the Eight laps were nominally to be completed in 30ish minutes
with the remaining two set at 16 minutes each. The thinking behind the two
16miniute laps was to help sort out the winners as the organisers were hoping
that we wouldn't be able to make it around in that time, I didn't disappoint
them. Cass kept feeding me glucose tablets and water whenever she got a chance
which seemed to have made a difference as I didn't feel particularly tired at the
end of the event. Not falling off to often may have also helped and taking it easy
when I had the time to do so.
The only real 'happening' was during the first of my 16 minute laps. At one point
on the course was a steep hill going up that was covered in deep sand. This hill caught
a few people out and was popular with the spectators. Let you imagination drift for a
moment and I shall place you in the saddle of a Husky WR250 ridden by myself during the
first of the 'tight' laps...
Got to go fast, got to go fast, got to go fast, don't want any points for being late!
MUST go fast. A third of the course done now and there is that steep hill ahead, OK,
hit it fast, keep the throttle open and aim for the top. Fast is good, it'll help
me float over the sand and it'll be fine.
Bottom of the hill, line it up... Whack it open and hang on!
Quarter of the way up, things are slowing , no problem just keep the gas on.
Nearly half way, the back is snaking a bit, 's ok just keep the power on and aim for the top.
Half way, snaking around a lot now but that ok just hang in there.
0.1 second later, now 90 degrees to the track and losing it. Keep the power on and hang in there,
If I slip off the side of the track it'll be ok I'll just be in the woodland and off the sand so
it might help a bit.
Now I'm in the woodland, that's ok just need to regain some control and aim upward and I'll be
at the top, must keep the power on though else I'll lose time and control.
OK, got control, YES now just aim for the top, Hmmm I seem to be aiming for the bottom with
my legs dangling and the throttle open, that's not good. Time to slow down.
Close throttle and brake that'll do it, can't get to the rear brake though
as my feet are trailing someplace near the rear axel. I'm on a very loose surface,
accelerating down a hill through woodland, things aren't looking too good. Have to
slow down as there are a LOT of trees in here, front brake will be ok if I use it
carefully. Ok ease on the front brake...
Oooohhhhh shiiiiit I'm going over!
Hmmm, handle bars need adjusting I'll do that with my thigh as I pass over them,
the brake and clutch leavers could also do with a tweak, I'll adjust them as
I pass using the back of my fingers. Adjustments to the bike made and now there's a tree in the way.
It may have been there for 50 years but I'll try and knock it over using my head.
The tree remained upright which is more than can be said for my head.
Finally picking up myself and the bike I realise that I'm almost at the bottom of
the hill again and will have to try again but this time without the spectacular
handle bar flip and tree bashing.
